What a fractional CFO costs, in writing.

Three monthly bands and three fixed-fee projects. Nobody else in the Wichita results publishes a figure; we think the fractional CFO cost should be the first thing you know, not the last. Illustrative prices for a concept site.

What moves the number

Four things change the price. Revenue is not one of them.

We quote from the cash review, in writing, before anything starts.

  • EntitiesEach additional legal entity with its own bank accounts and close adds work, and we price it.
  • The state of the closeIf the books close after the 20th, we start with controller work and the price reflects that for the first quarter.
  • Lenders and covenantsAn operating line with monthly covenant reporting is part of CFO Monthly. Two lenders, or an SBA loan with its own reporting, adds time.
  • A room aheadA sale, an acquisition or an investor round adds weeks of partner time. We quote it as a project, never as surprise hours.

Fractional or full-time

When a full-time CFO is the right call.

Fractional fits when

  • Sales are roughly $3M to $50M and the finance team is a bookkeeper or a small accounting staff
  • You need the forecast, the lender relationship and the board pack, not a full-time head of department
  • You want to see the work for a quarter before committing to a senior hire
  • A sale or a loan is the reason, and the need has an end date

Hire full-time when

  • The finance team is five or more people and needs a manager every day
  • You are past about $50M with several entities, or carry investor reporting weekly
  • Treasury, systems and people decisions need someone in the building daily
  • We will tell you when you reach this point, and help write the job description

What owners ask about the price

Q01How much does a fractional CFO cost compared with hiring one?

A full-time CFO in Wichita means a senior salary, benefits, a bonus and usually a recruiter's fee before the first day. Our bands run from $2,900 to $9,800 a month with no recruiting, no benefits and no notice period. Most owner-led companies between $3M and $20M in sales get what they need from CFO Monthly.

Q02Why does the Controller band cost less than the research floor for a CFO?

Because it is controller work, not CFO work: the close, reconciliations, sales and use tax and the monthly package. See fractional controller for the line between the two.

Q03Is there a contract or a minimum term?

The monthly bands run month to month after the first three months, with 30 days' notice. Fixed-fee projects are quoted in writing before they start.

Q04Do you charge by the hour?

No. Each band is a flat monthly fee for a written scope. If the scope changes, for a sale process or an acquisition, we quote the change in writing before doing the work.

Q05Are these real prices?

They are illustrative prices for a concept site. Tallgrass Financial Partners is a fictional firm created for portfolio purposes.

Next step

Start with the $1,950 review.

The cash review is the first step for every band: your bank data in, a working 13-week model and a runway number out, reviewed with a partner. You keep the model either way.
